REVIEW:

What I Didn't Like About This Film

Nothing to do with the movie per se. Just the cinema experience. Sold out downtown Toronto showing on opening night. A guy sitting directly behind us kept shouting WOW when each plot point occured. And whenever there was a female sexual moment. We must have shouted out WOW over 40 times. I'm glad he liked the movie, but....

Also, the cinema was boiling hot. There was a cold rush happening in Toronto in December 2013, which started to calm down by the time this movie opened. But they were still keeping up with the original hot temperatures inside. So you entered a sauna with 300 other people and it kept getting warmer and warmer as the movie progressed.

What I Loved About This Film

Everything else. Despite the negative theatre experience, American Hustle still entertained us throughout. There's a lot to like about this film:

- David O. Russell's direction. He has the unique ability to being subtle and flashy at the same time (or clever and simple). There's always something happening in every scene, but he never tips his hat too much. And there's always a lot to see. This is a very smart movie that easily earns a 2nd or even 3rd viewing where you'll like it the more you watch it. It has that Goodfella's quality - but it has more heart.

- There's something for everyone. Whether it's the cool art direction and wardrobe, the flashy 70s soundtrack, or the clever plot. Most people will like this film and for different reasons. The theme can be discussed too. Is it a movie about a con-man (and con woman) gaining a soul? It is a movie about ambition and how you can lose yourself along the way? Or is this just an metaphor for the 1970s and how the world changed from a black and white world to a world of grey?

- The performances are out of this world. Russell gives the viewer a clever plot driven film that's very cool to look at (and where he moves the camera more than his combined past films), mixed with many character driven roles. And he pulls it off too. A very busy film that seems to pull it all together to make perhaps the best film of 2013.

- Christian Bale does it again. You take his performance in OUT OF THE FURNACE with this one and you have perhaps the greatest acting ever done in the movies of all-time. He's that good in this film and the last.
