  MOVIE POSTERMILLION DOLLAR ARM, 2014
Movie Reviews

Review by Matthew Toffolo

SYNOPSIS:

REVIEW:

I saw this film long before I decided to write this review. I wanted to give it some time and see where it went popularity wise. As of this review, Millionaire Dollar Arm is a good film that nobody saw. And no one saw it because this is a film that's really not made anymore for Hollywood releases. A drama, sports film, that's family rated is something people will only watch if it's an HBO type film on television. And I can say that this is a sad state of affairs etc.... but it's unfortunately or fortunately it's just the way it is and there's nothing we can do about it. The question I ask is why Disney green lit this film and presented it to us in the middle of the summer movie season in the first place?

Well, they green lit the film because many of their past family sports films have done well. The Rookie is a key parallel to Millionaire Dollar Arm. I remember seeing The Rookie in April of 2002 in a packed audience on opening weekend where it ended up grossing over $150 million worldwide from a $20 million dollar budget. Million Dollar Arm (which you can easily argue is the better baseball film) won't even get close to $60 million worldwide and was made on a $25 million dollar budget. Using inflation it had a smaller budget than The Rookie but won't be nearly as financially successful.

Of course financial success and box office numbers isn't everything, but it shows you what has changed in the last 12 years. Using a sports metaphor, Million Dollar Arm is like the great baseball player trying to eke out one last season even though they realise that they don't have it anymore. They got older and the new players got younger. That's today's film market in a nutshell.

Million Dollar Arm is not good enough or impactful enough to garner any Oscar nominations or awards to get people to see it, and not action enough, edgy enough, or not cartoonish enough to garner families and their kids to watch it together. It's a film that's lost at sea and it could be found again or it could be lost forever. Disney I'm sure won't make this mistake again.

I really liked this film. It was simple in structure and impactful emotionally. But the ride of Disney sports themed movies is over.
