  MOVIE POSTERTHINGS TO COME, 1936
Movie Reviews

Director: William Cameron Menzies

Stars: Raymond Massey, Ralph Richardson and Cedric Hardwicke

Review by Russell Hill

SYNOPSIS:

The history of the world from 1940 to 2036 is told in great detail.

REVIEW:

Science Fiction cinema is synonymous with America. The monster movies of the 1950's depicted the terrible things which posed a danger to the way we lived. However, the Land of the Free isn't the only place in which Sci-Fi films have been made because, back in the 1930's, a British film was released which, as its title says, eerily predicted many events which happened.

Things to Come begins in 1940 and shows the beginning of war – this is 1940 after all and no one thought in 1936 that another world war was a possibility. However, this has indeed happened in Things to Come and in ‘Everytown', which is where the film is set, war continues for decades. Both the evils of humanity and how people cope with the changing landscape are shown throughout. Cities are built underground, warlords rise to power and many die. Will progress destroy mankind once and for all? Or will good triumph over evil?

The special effects in Things to Come are spectacular. The sets are fantastic and large high-rise buildings, which weren't built in the UK until the 1960s and 1970s, are in abundance here. There is one sequence in the film where the moon is conquered by humans who are aboard realistic-looking rockets. Things to Come even has a set of an indoor shopping precinct which comes complete with a large escalator.

There are many factors which explain why Things to Come looks amazing. The author HG Wells wrote the screenplay and apparently had great control over the film. The film's director, William Cameron Menzies, was also responsible for designing the sets. In fact, he actually made up the job title of Production Designer – before Menzies, no such job existed. Menzies continues to be a celebrated individual who helped to transform the way in which special effects progressed to their contemporary standard.

Although Things to Come was not a huge box office success, it remains one of the greatest Science Fiction films of all time. As its title says, it did indeed predict many things which were due to happen in shocking detail but, with its less than optimistic outlook on progress, the advancement of the human race isn't necessarily a bad thing.
