MOVIE POSTERTRIUMPH OF THE WILL, 1935
Movie Reviews

Director: Leni Riefenstahl

Stars: Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels and Hermann Goring

Review by Russell Hill

SYNOPSIS:

Various speeches are given at the 1934 Nazi Nuremburg Rally.

REVIEW:

Featuring some of the most evil people to have ever walked the Earth, Triumph of the Will was released during a period of naivety because the world did not know what damage Hitler would do. Casting this aside to the back of my mind, I watched it relatively recently and tried to enjoy it as a film and not as a propaganda piece.

In 1934, Hitler had only been Germany's Chancellor for a year. His ideologies troubled many of Europe's leaders and they were amazed at the transformation of a country which had been decimated by the Great War. The German economy was improving and jobs were being created. One way in which Hitler tried to control the minds of his people and convince them that he was their true leader was through cinema. Joseph Goebbels, who was the Minister of Propaganda, was an expert filmmaker and knew that it had huge potential to spread Nazi ideology.

Triumph of the Will's premise is that Germany has experienced a lot of trouble since they lost to Allied forces in 1918 and had to pay war reparations. Germany suffered greatly during the Great Depression and Hitler tried to convince people that the Jews were to blame and that great things lay ahead for them. Before Triumph of the Will, Hitler wasn't a well-known character and, although he had been elected as Chancellor in 1933, the German people were not entirely convinced that he was the person to improve their lives. Throughout Triumph of the Will, there are a considerable number of scenes where hopeful faces look up at Hitler. Various scenes of rallies held by the Hitler Youth are shown as well as huge scenes that consist of thousands of smiling individuals. Hitler is likened to a God and there are many shots of a blue sky which then follow the German Chancellor it is suggested that Hitler is a messiah who has been sent down from the heavens to rescue Germany.

We are used to seeing huge political rallies. The US elections normally consist of hundreds of people who want to voice their support. However, this wasn't the norm in Germany in the 1930's. In fact, 700,000 people attended the Nazi Party rally which is an astonishing figure whether they were there because they wanted to is not known. Riefenstahl uses various shots throughout to portray the scale and scope of this rally. Although Triumph of the Will does paint an evil and murderous regime in a positive light, it is a powerful film which sends shivers down the spine.

Nearly eighty years on, Triumph of the Will still has the power to shock and amaze audiences, especially as a supposedly cultured country could be convinced that a strange looking man who had violent ideologies could be their leader.
