MOVIE POSTERX-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, 2014
Movie Reviews

Director: Bryan Singer

Stars: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman

Review by Matthew Toffolo

SYNOPSIS:

The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.

REVIEW:

This is a very good film as it's enjoyable throughout with a lot of great dramatic moments from beginning to end. But I have just one plot question. Why did they have to escape Magneto from prison? I can't figure out why they did because even if they didn't they were going to keep doing the same thing. So what was the point? Can someone explain this to me?

The theme of X-Men: Days of Future Past is inner peace. Each character in this film needs to figure out if they can move on from their inner demons and depressions for being different. People judge them and want to do them harm -- so they have to ask themselves a question -- what do I do? How to I respond? If you have hope for the world and yourself, you try your best and look at the future as a place where we can all just get along. Or, you can become angry and see no hope and try your best to destroy the ones who are destroying your kind.

Director Bryan Singer has always made the X-Men movies as an allegory for gay rights and survival. Just because we are different doesn't mean that we are bad.

For Mystique and Magneto, they have a long journey ahead. So do Professor X and Wolverine for that matter. There's a fine line between good and evil. And just because someone loses their way doesn't mean that you shouldn't forgive them. HOPE is the key word. It's all about hope. Getting going, do you best and hope for the best. Don't give into self-pity.

Can you believe that this is the 7th X-Men movie since 2000? That's a lot of mutants and groaning going on in the world of cinema. And people aren't tired of it yet because the movies seem to keep getting better and better. As Spider-Man, Batman and such attempt to revamp the brand, this franchise has figured out a way to re-brand while also keeping the same team intact throughout. And no matter what, you have to give them a handshake or applause for figuring it all out.

I remember working in the film industry in Toronto way back in 2000 on a Sly Stallone car racing film. That film was moving into a studio as the original X-Men movie was moving out. So the construction team left a bunch of X-Men sets in the garbage. I remember this moment like it was yesterday. It was 3:00am and I was one of the few people left in the studio when I heard rumblings from outside. There were about 10-12 nerdy types inside the garbage disposal trying to salvage X-Men gear. At the time I didn't know what an X-Men was, but these people thought this garbage was worth thousands. That was my introduction to this franchise. And almost 15 years later it's stronger than ever as this is the best film out of the six previous.
